SINDH GOVT CANCELS REGISTRATION OF 30 PRIVATE DRUG TREATMENT & REHABILITATION CENTERS

THE CENTERS, LOCATED IN KARACHI, WERE NON-FUNCTIONAL ; CS ORDERS INSPECTIONS OF ALL THE CENTERS

 

KARACHI February 10: Sindh government decided on Monday to cancel the registration of 30 (thirty) Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centers (DTRC) and conducting the inspection of such centers by Sindh Healthcare Commission across the province.

The decision was taken in a meeting presided over by Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah and attended by Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Secretary Health, Additional IG Police Karachi and representatives of Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF).

The meeting was informed by the Secretary Social Welfare that there are more than fifty Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centers registered in the province but their performance is not satisfactory.

The ANF representatives informed that thirty of the DTRC use to receive grants but were not functional.

They include United Nations Association of Pakistan Karachi, Pakistan Youth Organization Karachi, Ibtada Karachi, Sahee DHA Karachi, Aas (Alleviate Addiction Suffering) DHA Karachi, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Welfare Society Karachi, Ahmed Welfare Memorial Society, Pakistan Addicare Center Ayub Goth Karachi, War Against Drug Abuse, Fellowship Recovery Center, Sohni Dharti Foundation, Hamdard University Hospital Karachi, Umeed Medical Center Karachi, Pakistan Adicare Society Karachi and others. Almost all the Centers are located in Karachi.

Chief Secretary directed the Secretary Social Welfare to cancel registration of all the thirty Centers and issue notices to all the centers to function properly if they are receiving grants. He ordered carrying out inspection of such centers by Sindh Healthcare Commission and submitting a report within 15 days. He also sought a report about the pattern of drug treatment and rehabilitation and the facilities available at DTRCs.

Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah said the government would upgrade the DTRCs and provide them with doctors, psychologists and grants if they are really working with spirit to treat and rehabilitate the drug addicts. He desired to formulate a uniform course for all such DTRCs and added that the government would arrange vocational training for those rehabilitated so that they can become useful citizens.
